Its etymology relates to its original function as a cleaning implement, specifically a broom or brush made from bundled bamboo twigs used for scrubbing pots or cleaning surfaces. Over time, the meaning of the character narrowed considerably to refer almost exclusively to the chasen, the finely split bamboo whisk used in the Japanese tea ceremony to prepare matcha.
