About
The character 罔 (wǎng) originated as a pictograph of a net, its outer frame interwoven with inner meshes. This concrete meaning was later transferred to the character 網 (wǎng), formed by adding the silk radical (糸). As 罔 was adopted for abstract concepts, its primary sense shifted to denote deception, falsehood, or the act of trapping someone with words or actions. In classical texts, it also developed a grammatical function as a negative particle meaning "none", "not", or "without", similar to other negators while losing its association with physical nets.
