About
A phono-semantic compound, 聃 combines the ear radical 耳 on the left with the phonetic component 冉 on the right. Originally, the character denoted ears that were unusually flat, lacked a distinct outer rim, or had an elongated shape. Today, it is known almost exclusively as the personal name of the philosopher Laozi, and rarely appears outside historical and philosophical discussions concerning his identity and writings.
