About

The character 蠷 is a phono-semantic compound created to denote a specific insect. Its left side features the insect radical 虫 (chóng), which categorizes it semantically as related to bugs or crawling creatures. The right component, 瞾 (qú), acts as the phonetic indicator, providing the pronunciation; it itself comprises two eyes (䀠) above a short-tailed bird (隹). 蠷 is used almost exclusively in the binome 蠷螋 (qúsōu), the entomological term for an earwig. Due to this specialized function in naming a single insect, its structure has remained consistent for this purpose without significant semantic change in historical texts.
