About
独 is the simplified version of the traditional 獨, a phono-semantic compound. The left radical 犭 ('dog' or 'animal') suggests the meaning, while the right side originally 蜀 supplied the sound; in simplification, 蜀 was replaced with the much simpler 虫. This character once named a specific aggressive, solitary species of monkey or wild dog that lived apart from others, and from that concrete reference it broadened to express the abstract ideas of being alone, single, or independent.
