The traditional character 狹, composed of the dog radical 犬 and the component 夾 conveying both phonetic value and the notion of clamping or constriction, originally referred to physical narrowness and later acquired metaphorical uses such as describing limited viewpoints. Its simplified counterpart 狭 retains the same radical but substitutes the right-hand element with 夹, a streamlined form of 夾, without shifting the essential meaning of confinement or tightness.
