谌 is a phono-semantic compound. Its left side features the semantic speech radical 讠, linking it to communication or declarations, while the right side, 甚, provides its pronunciation. The traditional form, 諶, pairs the unsimplified radical 言 with the same phonetic component. Originally, 谌 meant sincerity, faithfulness, or truthfulness in speech, a sense found in classical texts. Today, however, it is used almost exclusively as a surname, having largely lost its independent descriptive meaning in modern language outside of proper names.
