About
锳 is the simplified form of the traditional character 鍈, a phono-semantic compound that originally captured the resonant ring of a struck metal bell. The character is built from two parts: on the left, the simplified metal radical 钅 indicates a semantic link to metals and metallic objects; on the right, the component 英 functions as the phonetic, determining the pronunciation. While coined to evoke an auditory trait of ancient bronze instruments, 锳 is now exceedingly rare in modern Chinese. It survives mostly in historical texts and occasionally as a personal name.
