About

The traditional character 寫, composed of the roof radical 宀 over 舄, originally conveyed the sense of pouring out or displacing something, such as liquid from a container. This concept extended metaphorically to include the idea of transferring or transcribing information onto a surface, leading to its meaning of depicting or describing. By the medieval period, 寫 had acquired the specific sense of copying text, and later, the general act of writing. The simplified form 写, derived from a cursive rendition of the traditional character, has a reduced stroke count and continues to represent the act of writing.
