About
彝 is a structurally complex character: a top component 彑 (pig's snout), a middle section with 糸 (silk) and 米 (rice), and a bottom component 廾 (two hands holding something up). It originally designated a sacred bronze ritual vessel for ancestral sacrifices, the two hands graphically offering food and textiles to the spirits. Its meaning later broadened to enduring moral laws and societal norms. Today, 彝 is also the official designation for the Yi people, a major ethnic minority residing predominantly in the mountainous regions of southwestern China.
