About
升 (shēng) originated as a pictograph of a ladle or measuring vessel for grain and liquids. As a noun, it denotes a unit of volume now equivalent to a liter. The scooping action involves an upward motion, which gave the character the verbal sense of rising, ascending, or hoisting. In modern usage, 升 also serves as the official simplified form for 昇 (to rise, as the sun) and 陞 (to be promoted in rank).
