This shape gave rise to the meaning of a measuring vessel and a unit of volume, now equivalent to a liter. Because scooping involves an upward motion, the character also means to rise or ascend. In simplified Chinese, 升 replaces the traditional characters 昇 (to rise like the sun) and 陞 (to be promoted in rank).
