About
雕 is a phono-semantic compound: 周 (zhōu) supplies the sound, and 隹 (zhuī, "short-tailed bird") gives the meaning. It is the simplified form of 鵰. Originally, the character referred to a large bird of prey, such as an eagle or vulture. Later, when it was adopted as the simplified form of the traditional carving characters 彫 and 琱, it also took on the sense of "to carve, engrave", now its most common use. Today, 雕 still names the bird but more often describes carving wood, stone, and other materials.
