About
得 (dé) is a compound ideograph depicting the act of acquiring something valuable. Its structure combines 彳 (chì), meaning movement, with a right-side element showing a hand (寸, cùn) grasping a cowry shell (貝, bèi), an ancient currency. The core meaning is the verb "to obtain" or "to acquire", whether a physical object or an abstract benefit. This concept of acquisition later extended to grammatical roles, functioning as a particle to introduce complements of degree and as an auxiliary verb expressing necessity.
