About

The character 彼 combines the walking radical 彳 on the left with the phonetic component 皮 on the right. The radical originally suggested movement, particularly walking toward a place. Over time, the character evolved from a verb of motion into a demonstrative pronoun meaning "that" or "the other", becoming the direct antonym of 此 ("this" or "here"). In modern usage, it functions almost exclusively as a pronoun indicating distance or the opposing side in a contrast.
