About
生 (shēng) is a pictograph of a sprout (屮) emerging from the ground (一). The upper strokes form a young plant with leaves, while the bottom horizontal line represents the earth. Its original meaning of sprouting or growing extended to giving birth, producing offspring, and being alive. The image of something fresh from the soil also led to the meanings raw, unripe, or unprocessed.
