The character 稗 is a phono-semantic compound. Its left side is the semantic radical 禾 (hé), meaning grain or crops, while the right side is the phonetic component 卑 (bēi), which suggests the notion of "low" or "inferior". Its primary botanical sense refers to barnyard grass, a weed that invades rice fields, mimics the crop, and reduces yield by competing for nutrients. As an undesirable "false grain", the character extended metaphorically to denote things that are trivial, unofficial, or of lesser status. This is exemplified in the term "稗官野史" (bàiguān yěshǐ), which describes unofficial histories and folklore collected by minor officials, as opposed to the formal, state-sanctioned dynastic histories.
