About
萆 (bì) is a phono-semantic compound found in traditional Chinese pharmacopeia. Its upper part is the grass radical 艹 (cǎo), indicating a plant, while the lower component 卑 (bēi, meaning 'low' or 'inferior') serves as the phonetic. It appears almost exclusively in the term 萆薢 (bìxiè), a creeping vine or yam whose rhizomes are processed to treat joint pain and urinary ailments, and remains a specialized taxonomic term absent from everyday language.
