About
芃 (péng) is a phono-semantic compound with the grass radical 艹 (cǎo) on top indicating a plant, and 凡 (fán) below giving the sound. Originally describing the lush, vigorous growth of vegetation, it appears in classical poetry such as the Book of Songs to depict thriving crops or grasslands. Its meaning has remained consistent, but today 芃 is mainly found in classical literature, poetry, or personal names conveying vitality, rather than as a common adjective in modern Chinese.
