jié beetle

Etymology

About

The character is a phono-semantic compound: the left-side radical designates insects, worms, and other such creatures, placing it in the semantic category of entomology; the right-side component (jí) is the phonetic, specifying the pronunciation without adding meaning. It refers to wood-boring beetles and similar bugs that bore into or eat wood and plant matter, and often occurs in the compound 蛣蜣, a regional synonym for dung beetles.
