谱 is the simplified form of the traditional character 譜, a phono-semantic compound used for recording information. Its left component, the speech radical 讠, links the character to language and verbal documentation. The right component, 普, provides the phonetic element and also conveys the meaning of "general" or "widespread". Originally, 谱 referred to a systematic table, register, or chart for documenting genealogical lineages or historical facts. Its meaning later extended to denote a musical score or sheet music. In colloquial use, the term broadened further to describe a reliable standard, a mental plan, or a firm grasp of a situation, moving from physical records to cognitive preparedness.
