About
贉 is a phono-semantic compound in which the cowrie shell radical 貝 expresses money, financial transactions, or valuables, and the phonetic element 覃 (tán) on the right dictates the pronunciation dàn. In historical usage, it meant making an advance payment, compensating, or paying for goods and services. Now largely obsolete and without a simplified variant, the character has been supplanted by more common financial vocabulary.
