Originally meaning to melt or smelt metals, 铄 is a phono-semantic compound. The traditional form 鑠 pairs the metal radical 金 on the left with the phonetic 樂 on the right. Simplification reduces it to 钅 and 乐, greatly cutting strokes while keeping the same structure. The meaning later broadened metaphorically to describe something shining or brilliant, evoking the glow of molten metal.
