The character 阃 is a phono-semantic compound: the outer door radical 门 marks an architectural boundary, while the internal component 困 (kùn) supplies the sound. It originally denoted a door sill or the threshold of a room. The traditional form 閫 uses the full radical 門 with the same phonetic 困. Over time, through metonymy, the meaning extended from the threshold to the women's inner apartments within a traditional Chinese residential compound, and eventually came to refer to matters concerning women or the domestic realm overseen by the wife.
