About
The character 阨 (è) is a phono-semantic compound. Its semantic radical 阝 (fù), placed on the left, signifies a mound or terrain, while 厄 (è) provides the phonetic element. Originally, 阨 described a narrow, hazardous mountain pass or constricted topographical space. This literal meaning later extended metaphorically to represent states of entrapment, severe hardship, or extreme danger. In classical texts, it often interchanges with its phonetic component 厄 to denote adversity, grounding the abstract concept of difficulty in the physical image of being geographically cornered.
