The character 阳 is the simplified form of 陽. Its left component 阝 (the "ear" radical on the left) represents a hill or mound. In the traditional character, the right side 昜 shows the sun shining brightly and serves as both a semantic and phonetic element; the simplified form reduces it to the sun radical 日. Originally, the character denoted the sunny, south-facing slope of a hill or the north bank of a river, both of which receive direct sunlight. This geographical brightness later gave rise to its philosophical meaning as the masculine, positive, active, and bright principle in the Yin-Yang duality.
