About
陇 is the simplified form of 隴, a phono-semantic compound combining the radical 阝 (fú, 'mound' or 'hill') with the phonetic 龙 (lóng, 'dragon'), a simplification of the traditional 龍. The radical suggests a landform, and the character originally referred to elevated ridges, steep hills, or raised earthen paths separating agricultural fields. Over time, it became associated with the Long mountain range in northwestern China, and then became the official single-character abbreviation and historical designation for the modern-day Gansu Province.
