鲠 (traditional 鯁) is a phono-semantic compound combining the fish radical 鱼/魚 on the left with the phonetic 更 on the right. It originally referred to a fishbone stuck in the throat, and from this image of a rigid obstruction, the character came to figuratively describe a blunt, unyieldingly honest person, often to the point of tactlessness.
