About
鶕 (ān) is a phono-semantic compound composed of the bird radical 鳥 (niǎo) and the phonetic 奄 (yǎn). A historical variant of 鵪, it appears in the compound 鵪鶉 (ānchún) "quail", and it refers solely to that ground-nesting bird with no extended meanings. Although attested in classical texts and variant dictionaries, 鶕 has been supplanted by 鵪 as the standard modern character.
