About
麄 (cū) is an associative compound that triples 鹿 (lù, 'deer'), evoking a stampeding herd. Originally conveying distance, scattering, or wildness, it later shifted to coarseness and roughness. In common usage, it was largely replaced by 粗 (cū), which marks coarseness with the rice radical (米). Now mostly found in classical texts and dictionaries, 麄 illustrates how tripling a component could create abstract meanings from animal behaviour.
