Etymology
Pictograph of a deer.
About
鹿 originated as a pictograph depicting a deer, with its distinctive antlers, head, body, and legs. The modern character retains this structure: the upper part stylizes the antlers and head, the lower part the legs and torso. Its primary meaning has always been the animal itself. Because deer were esteemed animals and frequent targets of the hunt, the character occasionally appears in classical texts as a metaphor for political power or the throne, the ultimate prize that ambitious rulers sought to seize in times of conflict.
