About
The character 兼 originally depicted a hand (又) grasping two stalks of grain (禾) at the same time, directly illustrating the act of handling two things at once. This gave rise to its modern verb and adverb senses: performing multiple tasks simultaneously, holding concurrent offices, or combining different elements into one. Underlying these uses is the idea of inclusiveness, managing multiple distinct things without having to choose between them.
