About
Originally, 兹 (traditional 茲) was composed of the grass radical 艹 atop two silk threads 幺, a combination that pointed to the proliferation of plants or the multiplying of threads, giving it the early meaning "luxuriant growth". Yet, already in the early stages of the script, the character was taken as a phonetic loan to serve as the demonstrative "this" or "here" and the adverb "now" or "at present". This borrowing proved so dominant that the original vegetal and silk associations vanished entirely; in modern usage, 兹 functions solely in formal or classical writing to specify a subject, location, or time.
