About
The character 几 is a pictograph depicting a low table or stool with a flat top and two curved legs. Originally, it referred specifically to this type of domestic furniture. Today, it also functions as the simplified form of the traditional character 幾, which is composed of elements representing silk threads and a weapon, and originally meant a tiny or imperceptible amount. Due to this merger, 几 is now used as a question word for "how many" and as an adjective meaning "several" or "a few", while retaining its original meaning of a small table.
