About
玑 is a phono-semantic compound: the simplified jade radical ⺩ (王) on the left indicates precious stones or gems, while 几 on the right gives the sound and simplifies the traditional phonetic 幾 found in 璣. Originally, it referred to an irregular, non-spherical pearl, and by extension a small gem. The character was also used in the names of ancient astronomical instruments, such as the armillary sphere xuánjī.
