About
The character 兹, in its traditional form 茲, combines the grass radical 艹 above two bundles of silk 幄, originally suggesting the growth or multiplication of plants. Its early meaning related to vegetation proliferating, but it was soon repurposed as a phonetic loan to function as a demonstrative pronoun for "this" or "here", and as an adverb for "now". The original botanical sense thus became obsolete, and the character came to be used primarily in formal or classical contexts to indicate time, place, or a referenced subject.
