About
批 is a phono-semantic compound: the semantic radical 扌 (shǒu, 'hand') points to an action done with the hand, and the phonetic component 比 (bǐ) provides the sound. The original meaning was slapping, striking, or pushing aside. This physical sense metaphorically extended to the handling of documents, an official writing comments, judgments, or criticisms on reports. The meaning later broadened to include criticizing, appraising, and processing goods in bulk, as well as serving as a measure word for batches, groups, or lots.
