The character 报 is the simplified form of the traditional 報, which originally depicted an execution block or a kneeling figure beside a hand holding a punishment instrument, conveying notions of retribution or receiving a verdict. In the modern simplified version, the complex left side of the traditional character is replaced by the hand radical 扌, while the right-hand component is retained in an altered form. Over time, the core meaning of responding to actions shifted from an early emphasis on vengeance, reward, or karmic retribution to more contemporary communicative concepts, reporting information, announcing news, and ultimately became the standard term for newspapers and journals.
