The character 麄 (cū) is an associative compound formed by tripling 鹿 (lù, deer), visually suggesting a stampeding herd. This structure originally conveyed ideas of distance, scatter, or wildness, which later shifted toward the meaning of coarseness or roughness. Over time, the simpler character 粗 (cū), using the rice radical, replaced it in common usage for this sense.
