About
黛 (dài) is a phono-semantic compound, combining the semantic radical 黑 (hēi, "black"), which indicates its association with dark colors, with the phonetic component 代 (dài). Its primary historical meaning is a dark mineral pigment used by women in ancient China to paint their eyebrows. Due to this cosmetic use, the character also came to poetically refer to beautiful women or their stylized eyebrows. The meaning later expanded to describe dark, blue-black, or deep green hues in nature, frequently appearing in classical poetry to depict distant mountains or deep waters in shadow.
