Etymology
Depicts a child opening its mouth to cry. Original form of 嗁. The modern meaning is a phonetic loan.
About
也 (yě) began as a pictograph, likely depicting a snake, funnel, or basin, though its exact visual origin is debated. The physical form was soon abandoned, and the character evolved into a grammatical particle. In classical Chinese, it commonly appeared at the end of a sentence to mark a pause or assertion. In modern usage, this function has been entirely superseded; 也 now primarily serves as an adverb meaning "also" or "too", placed before verbs or adjectives.
