About
Though its origin is unclear, 卡 is traditionally explained as a combination of 上 (up/above) and 下 (down/below), an arrangement that vividly conveys the idea of something caught tightly between an upper and a lower surface. From this image, the native meanings of "stuck", "jammed", and a checkpoint or barrier that restricts movement emerged. In contemporary usage, however, these senses have been largely overshadowed by the character's role as a phonetic loan from English for "card" (credit card, ID card, greeting card) and for "calorie", although the original obstruction meanings are still known.
