zǎi (noun) child; young animal

Etymology

About

(zǎi) combines the mountain radical above (sī) and serves as a colloquial term for a child, offspring, or young animal. Although the structure of mountain and thought may seem opaque, the character originated in regional dialects to mean son or young creature. It often carries a diminutive or affectionate tone when referring to humans, but can become derogatory depending on context and the compounds it forms. Over time, it spread from dialect into standard Chinese, especially to denote young livestock, as in 猪崽 (piglet).
