About
椤 (luó), traditionally written 欏, is a phono-semantic character referring to particular trees and woody plants. The left side is the wood radical 木 (mù), which sets the character in the category of trees, wood, and timber. The right side 罗 (luó) is a phonetic component, simplified from the complex traditional form 羅, that gives the sound. Historically, 椤 has named several plants, above all the tree fern 桫椤 (suōluó), an ancient species. Today it appears almost exclusively in botanical classification for these fern-like trees.
