The simplified character 术 derives from the traditional form 術, which originally meant a road or path within a city. In its traditional structure, the semantic radical 行 (xíng) represents a crossroad or walking, while the phonetic component 朮 (zhú / shù) depicts a type of glutinous millet. Over time, the meaning shifted from a physical path to a metaphorical one, came to denote a method, technique, or skill used to accomplish a task.
