About
Structured as a phono-semantic compound, 樗 combines the semantic radical 木 (tree/wood) with the phonetic component 雩 on the right. Botanically, it specifically denotes the Ailanthus altissima, or tree of heaven, a fast-growing deciduous species native to China. In classical Chinese philosophy, especially Daoist texts, the character developed a metaphorical meaning representing uselessness or coarse timber, materials unsuitable for traditional carpentry due to irregular or poor-quality wood. This concept of "uselessness" was paradoxically employed to illustrate how being unfit for conventional exploitation could allow a living entity to survive longer, avoiding being cut down for human use.
