Etymology
Pictograph of a pheasant with a plumed tail.
About
The character 翟 combines the "feather" radical 羽 (yǔ) on top with the "short-tailed bird" component 隹 (zhuī) below, visually linking it to birds and plumage. Originally referring to a long-tailed pheasant, its feathers were used as ceremonial props in ancient dances. While these original meanings are now less common, 翟 is widely used as a surname, pronounced either Zhai or Di depending on the family lineage.
