Etymology
Originally a pictograph of a shoulder. Later the ⺼ (flesh) component was added.
About
The character 肩 originally depicted a shoulder, with the flesh component 月 (a form of ⺼) later added at the bottom, while the top part 户 preserves the ancient pictograph. It denotes the shoulder, the joint connecting the arm or foreleg to the torso in humans and animals. Because the shoulders are the primary spot for bearing loads with a pole, the meaning extended to carrying or bearing a physical burden. This then developed into the abstract sense of shouldering responsibilities or undertaking weighty duties.
