About

The character 觜 combines the semantic radical 角 (jiǎo), meaning horn, at the bottom with the phonetic component 此 (cǐ) at the top. This structure originally referred to the beak or snout of a bird or animal, using the horn radical to indicate a hard, protruding feature. Over time, the character's meaning expanded to become the formal name for the Turtle Beak constellation, one of the Twenty-Eight Mansions in Chinese astronomy. Its composition shows how a physical animal trait was categorized and later repurposed for specialized astronomical use, before the more anatomically specific character 嘴, with the mouth radical, became common.
