The traditional character 儀 is a phono-semantic compound, featuring the human radical 亻 on the left and the complex component 義 on the right. 義 provides both the pronunciation and a semantic overtone of propriety or righteousness. The simplified 仪 keeps the human radical but substitutes 義 with the simpler character 义. Originally, the character denoted proper human conduct, bearing, appearance, and etiquette. This concept of correct form later expanded to encompass formal ceremonies, rites, and rituals, and eventually precision instruments and apparatuses used for measurement and observation.
